Managed backup
Also called: automatic backup, encrypted backup, snapshot backup
Managed backup is scheduled, encrypted, off-device backup with a tested restore path, as opposed to copying files somewhere and hoping.
Managed backup means the system takes care of scheduling, encryption, retention and restore, rather than leaving you to script it.
The parts that matter:
- Scheduled, not manual. Backups you have to remember are backups you do not have.
- Off-device. A copy on the same disk protects against nothing that actually happens.
- Encrypted before it leaves. The storage provider should hold ciphertext only.
- Retained sensibly. Enough history to recover from corruption you noticed late.
- Restore-tested. An untested backup is a hypothesis.
That last point is the one most setups fail. The measure of a backup system is not whether it uploads, it is whether a restore has ever been performed successfully — which is why a one-command restore matters more than the backup schedule.
