deputyOS vs ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a hosted product with frontier models; deputyOS runs an assistant on hardware you own. The trade is capability against control.

Short answer: If capability per pound is what matters, ChatGPT wins and it is not close. Choose deputyOS when data residency, offline operation, cost control or auditability outweigh raw capability.
Where ChatGPT is the better choice
- Frontier models you cannot match locally at any sane hardware budget
- Nothing to run, update, back up or secure
- Multimodal — voice, images, video, canvas, code interpreter
- Works on every device, instantly, with no setup
- Continuous improvement without you doing anything
Where deputyOS is the better choice
- Your conversations and files stay on your hardware
- No seat pricing; you pay providers directly for what you use
- The model you depend on cannot be deprecated out from under you
- Works offline entirely, including with the network cable out
- Auditable — you can inspect and verify exactly what is running
Being straightforward about this
For most people, most of the time, ChatGPT is the better product. Frontier models run on hardware you cannot buy, the multimodal features are genuinely useful, and there is nothing to operate. A local 7B model is not a substitute for GPT-class capability and pretending otherwise helps nobody.
deputyOS exists for the cases where those advantages do not settle it.
When self-hosting actually wins
The data cannot leave. Legal, medical, financial, classified, or contractual constraints. This is a hard boundary rather than a preference, and no amount of capability resolves it.
There is no network. Air-gapped environments, remote sites, poor connectivity.
deputyOS boots and works with -net none.
Costs need to be predictable. Per-seat pricing scales badly across a household or a team. Bringing your own API key means you pay per token, directly, and see per-device spend.
Continuity matters. Hosted models get deprecated. A workflow built on a specific model can break on someone else’s schedule. Weights on your disk do not change.
You need to audit it. Reproducible builds, SBOMs and signed attestations let you verify what is running rather than trust a description of it.
It is not either/or
deputyOS is a messenger, not a model provider. Bring an Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenRouter or Google AI Studio key and it will call frontier models on your behalf — your key, your account, no proxying or metering in between.
The common arrangement is a local model for anything touching private data and a cloud API for tasks that genuinely need frontier capability. deputyOS is built for that split rather than against it.
